A good WhatsApp chatbot does a few jobs well: greets new contacts, captures leads, answers the top questions, checks order status, and gets out of the way when a human is needed. This guide walks through building one step by step with a no code WhatsApp chatbot builder, using ZenTalk Flows as the example.
Start with one job
Resist the urge to build one giant bot. Pick the single conversation you have most often and build that first. ZenTalk includes five starters to copy: Welcome menu, Lead capture, FAQ menu, Order status, and Opt in confirmation.
Pick the trigger
- A keyword, such as PRICE or MENU.
- First message, for anyone messaging you for the first time.
- Reply to a campaign, so replies to a broadcast get a guided follow up.
- Any other message, as a fallback when nothing else matched.
Add the steps
In ZenTalk you click Add a step and pick from:
| Step | What it does |
|---|---|
| Message | Send text, an image, a video, or a file |
| Buttons | Up to three quick reply buttons |
| List menu | Up to ten options in a tidy list |
| Question | Ask something and save the answer to a contact attribute |
| Template | Send an approved template, useful outside the 24 hour window |
| Condition | Branch on an answer, a tag, or an attribute |
| Delay | Wait before the next step |
| Tag contact and Set attribute | Label the contact for segments later |
| HTTP request | Call your own system, for example to look something up |
| Assign to team | Hand the chat to the whole team or one teammate with a note |
| AI assistant | Let the ZenTalk AI take over, with extra instructions |
| End flow | Finish cleanly |
Example: a lead capture flow
- Trigger: First message.
- Message: a short welcome with your business name.
- Buttons: Get a quote, Talk to sales, Something else.
- Get a quote: Question steps ask for the service and budget, saved as attributes, then Tag contact as quote request.
- Talk to sales: Assign to team with a note.
- Something else: AI assistant, which answers from your knowledge and hands off if it cannot help.
Test before you publish
Open Test this flow to run it in the simulator, where nothing is sent and delays are skipped. When it looks right, send it to a real contact as a last check, then publish. The runs drawer shows every conversation as Running, Waiting for reply, Completed, Handed off, Stopped, or Failed, with a step by step history, so you can see exactly where people drop off.
A few rules that keep bots friendly
- Always offer a way to a human.
- Respect opt outs. In ZenTalk a STOP message ends every active run for that contact.
- Do not restart the same flow on someone who just finished it. Flow settings let you set a cool down period.
- Keep button labels short and clear.
Flows are part of ZenTalk WhatsApp marketing, next to broadcasts and store automations. If you sell online, read WhatsApp for Shopify and WooCommerce.
Common questions
Can I build a WhatsApp chatbot without coding?
Yes. A visual flow builder on the WhatsApp Business API lets you set a trigger, add messages with buttons or list menus, ask questions, branch on conditions, and hand off to an AI or a person, all without code.
What should a WhatsApp chatbot do first?
Pick the one conversation you have most often, usually a welcome menu, lead capture, FAQ, or order status, and build that well before adding more.
Can a WhatsApp chatbot hand off to a human?
It should. In ZenTalk an Assign to team step hands the chat to the whole team or one teammate with a note, and an AI assistant step lets the AI take over for open questions.
